GRASP - ( Guided Robot for Automatically Sorting Parts) is the latest system developed by AA Robotics for flexible parts feeding and handling.

The system uses a camera to inspect each individual component part and determine its radial position and orientation. The  DENSO robot is then used to pick and finally manipulate the parts for processing or assembly. The system can shake groups of parts to separate or invert them if they cannot be readily picked by the robot.

A single robot can be used to feed up to 4 components and changeover is achieved in the press of a button using the full colour robot teach pendant. Teaching the system new parts is simple and does not require skilled technicians. In addition to its capabilities as a highly flexible feeding and handling system, GRASP can also be used to sort good parts from reject parts.

AA Robotics has cleverly configured the 3 main system elements - parts feeder - vision system and robot - into a compact cell which offers a number of benefits including:-

• HIGH SPEED - the system can achieve pick and place cycles of <1.0 second subject to distance, weight and orientation required.
• HIGHLY FLEXIBLE - parts up to 70mm x 70mm and weighing up to 50g can be processed. Multiple orientation picking together with in-out of tolerance selection is also possible.
• NO TOOLING - components are inspected by the vision system and identified by shape. No fixturing or mechanical parts are required allowing fast component changeover.
• REDUCES OPERATIONS - when compared to a bowl feeder, the GRASP system eliminates a full machine operation by both orientating and presenting the part, eliminating the need for a track, escapement and pick and place device.
• BULK STORAGE WITH PURGE FACILITY - the system has a storage capacity of up to 150 litres as standard (greater can be provided), and can also be easily purged at the end of a shift or production run
• FUTURE PROOF - with no mechanical parts to change and  a simple teach routine, the system can easily be configured for new part types
